The Honus Wagner T206 card in this auction is owned by Cincinnati, Ohio entrepreneurs Ray Edwards and his cousin, John Cobb. Cobb purchased the card in 1983 or 1984 from a collector for $1,800. Its earlier provenance is unknown. It has a Piedmont (Factory 25) back, which few are known to exist.
The Honus Wagner T206 Piedmont back has been referred to as the “Holy Grail” of card collectors and is often mentioned as, “The Card.” Wayne Gretzky, NHL superstar, was included in a purchase of a Wagner Piedmont back, which he purchased in 2000 for $1.26 million.
In 2011 the Cobb/Edwards card went under more scientific forensic testing to prove its authenticity by Johanne Bergeron-Forensic Document Examiner out of (Quebec) Montreal, Canada. The Cobb/Edwards card was placed in a VSC40FS (Video Spectral Comparator). The Cobb/Edwards card passed all tests by the VSC40FS machine. Also in June of 2011 the Cobb/Edwards card was given a grade of Authentic by Martin Brouillard-Senior Grader (ACA Certification Quebec Canada). He also did his own test on the Cobb/Edwards card. With all the findings by the experts and Mr. Brouillard, the card was finally slabbed (encased) as an AUTHENTIC unreleased version card as of June 24, 2011 by ACA Grading.
